While listening to the radio the other day I heard the results of a study that I thought was quite interesting. This study was done over two years by scientists at the University of California-Irvine and the University of Toronto, and the outcome was that regular exercise, mental stimulation and a diet rich in antioxidants can help keep the brain sharp in older dogs — and perhaps work in the same way for humans.
Dogs that were between the ages of 7 & 11 did better on cognitive tests & were able to learn new tasks & tricks when fed a diet of with fruits, veggies and vitamins, got exercise at least twice a week and played with other dogs and stimulating toys. According to Elizabeth Head, one of the researchers at the University of California-Irvine, "The combination of an antioxidant diet and lots of cognitive stimulation — which was almost the equivalent of going to school every day — really did improve brain function in these animals".
My Take: They say that there are seven human years to every dog year, so is this possible in humans that are 49 to 77? Perhaps this will prevent forgetfulness in our grandmas & grandpas that may be bored with their day to day activities. If nothing else we've learned that it IS possible for an old dog to learn new tricks. ;)

Pampered Pooches of America

First of all, Merry Christmas everyone! :)
While browsing the internet today I came across a video clip from National Geographic about how America pampers their pets. I didn't think much of the information discussed in the video was new to us pet lovers, but I did enjoy viewing all of the happy tails wagging and seeing the dogs hanging out at the local pet hotel/spa. I think as pet owners we sometimes want to keep our pooches all to ourselves and treat them as people, but as this video shows, they thrive to be in an environment of their doggy peers. Look how happy they are! :) I think all dogs need some more 'doggy time' in their lives.

A New Direction
I've been pretty stuck lately on what to post since I've been prepping to start my business venture. I've decided that the LoveBarklee blog is going to report on amazing new dog products that are also being release as well as new dog studies. Starting in 2009 we'll be launching into a new reporting venture - if you see anything that you are buzzing about let us know!
Have a Happy Holiday Season!!
